Anthony Curtis was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, studying at Loughborough College, and Bath Academy of Art in Corsham in 1952. He was taught by artists including Terry Frost, Bryan Wynter, Peter Lanyon and Kenneth Armitage.

Curtis was influenced by his St Ives tutors, many of his works were painted on visits to Frost and Lanyon in Cornwall.
